Every school closed overnight

When the pandemic closed every school in the UK, BBC Bitesize responded by putting hundreds of curriculum lessons online, every day. It needed a new experience, fast, that a child, a parent and a teacher could all find their way around.

And the ground kept moving. As the country went in and out of lockdown, and government guidance on schools changed, the experience had to change with it.

My contribution

I led content design, shaping the new journey so it worked for every audience at once.

  • Naming and promotion: I facilitated naming and promotional copy workshops, reframing the experience as lockdowns and school closures came and went.
  • A strategy built to flex: I developed a content strategy that let us react quickly to shifting government announcements on closures and reopenings.
  • Supporting editorial: I helped editorial colleagues use the new Bitesize voice and tone guidance to create lesson content.

The outcome

In three weeks, we built a new online experience that helped families and teachers navigate over 1,800 lessons.

Bitesize Daily Lessons reached over 70 million views, and kept evolving as schools opened and closed. Its successes went on to steer Bitesize's strategy for the future.
