The challenge
Our content design team hosted its first, and so far only, trainee: a UX design trainee on placement with us. As part of mentoring them, I set a brief: find a way to bring content design thinking to the non-content designers across our department.
The result had to fit where designers already work, and help people who don't think of themselves as writers feel more confident writing user-centred content.
My contribution
I worked closely with our trainee throughout, guiding the work early on and overseeing delivery in the later stages.
- Building confidence: I led the first stakeholder interviews with colleagues across the department, until our trainee felt confident running their own.
- Support along the way: I set up twice-weekly catch-ups and gave ad hoc support as they worked through the content design process.
- From ideas to cards: I facilitated research synthesis and ideation, helped narrow down the ideas, and co-designed and wrote 5 decks of cards with our trainee.
- Launch and learn: I defined the release strategy, built a feedback mechanism into Figma, and continued to iterate on and maintain the cards.
The outcome
We launched the cards as a Figma and FigJam library at a studio day, when our whole UX department comes together. They've since been used over 1,000 times across our Figma team.
Our trainee was promoted to a junior role, and I went on to support them as their line manager.
